Advocacy

I believe that advocacy is publicly supporting and spreading word of an issue.  Advocacy is not simply just believing in something, but it is actively participating in an effort to change an issue while raising awareness. When I think of movements that work to create change, I definitely admire the people’s desire to put forth the effort to advocate for their beliefs.  Some movements that come to mind are women’s suffrage, Black Lives Matter, women’s rights, civil rights, and LGBTQ rights.  I am definitely interested in women’s suffrage, civil rights, and some of the things women are fighting for today.  I believe some of the things women are currently fighting for (equal pay, abortion rights, etc.) are of interest to me because they directly affect me as a woman and they could have an impact on my future.  In exploring these movements I think I will benefit from learning more in depth about them as well as seeing how these types of advocacy are carried out.  I am interested in exploring the different ways that people go about raising awareness through social media and protests.  I also believe that in exploring these movements I will become more aware of the extent of some injustices.  I also think it could benefit me if I look into a movement I’m not entirely behind so that I can see the other’s side point. anticipate coming across some gray area moving forward because sometimes these issues have strong points on both sides of the story and it can be hard to feel one hundred percent behind one side.

  1. Julie, I really like your idea that “advocacy is not simply just believing in something, but it is actively participating in an effort to change an issue while raising awareness”. I think that a lot of people mistake believing in something for being an advocate for it, which isn’t always the case. As a woman, I also believe in many of the same issues that you mention in your post such as equal pay and abortion rights. I recently heard that women earn around $0.80 for every $1.00 that men earn solely based on our gender. I think that your idea to research a movement that you don’t know a lot about/fully support so that you’re able to learn more about both sides is a great idea because, a lot of the time, people are unwilling to do so. Overall, you’ve done a really good job with this post!
